At first, he had no intention of involving himself.

He had only intended to watch – he never planned on interfering. He was normally able to do things according to plan. Under any other circumstances, he would have simply done what he had originally intended.

Under any other circumstances.

He was initially uninterested in getting involved in this, the latest of the reikai-tantei’s predicaments. It was the humans causing the problems, and quite frankly under normal circumstances he was not allowed to kill humans. As he was a demon, the reikai-tantei’s hired force, there was really not very much he could do in a direct situation like this that did not involve violence.

Yet as the time wore on, he became increasingly curious and slowly started to feel invested in the problem. Perhaps it was the allure of the Chapter Black tape, which was undoubtedly a factor in his decisions overall. But maybe it had something to do with his newfound sense of unity with his unlikely companions. He would never admit it, but he had a varying degree of respect for Yusuke. Varying in that he found it easy to respect the human’s power, but he was constantly taken aback by the boy’s general stupidity and total lack of common sense.

So he had decided to catch up with them, and fight alongside them once more. He discovered that the oaf himself had been abducted – but Kuwabara was even stupider than Yusuke, so it was not a finding that particularly surprised the youkai.

And here, the idiot spirit detective was on the run from a mere human. Yusuke was holding back – he could kill a thousand demons, but he could never kill another human unless it was the only possible action. He held back despite this human’s incredible abilities, and Hiei snorted and turned away at first. Yusuke was going to get himself killed – not by a powerful demon, but a simple human.

Yet somehow, the thought of this idiot – this incredibly stupid but powerful human – being killed made him… uncomfortable.

So just as the human machine was set aflame, Hiei found himself almost out of instinct grabbing his human companion and removing him from harm’s way. And to save himself further effort and sparing Yusuke the consequences of his own stupidity – in spite of his contractual terms – plunged his sword directly through the offending human.

As he dropped the man he held under his arm into the dirt, he sighed. He had only intended on watching, never planned on interfering with Yusuke’s battle or his dilemma. But Yusuke had intruded in the youkai’s entire life – had meddled with his outlook on everything.

So it was about time Hiei did some of the interfering.
