It was difficult for him to comprehend the fire demon.
He didn’t think he would ever completely understand the youkai standing before him. Hiei left much to ponder about the reasons for his actions, about his past and present. Yusuke could never quite tell how the fire demon would react in any given situation either. It was no big deal, really, because despite all of the things he didn’t know about Hiei, there were a few things he was certain of.
He knew that the youkai had his back. Even if he could never tell what the other was thinking, he could always trust Hiei to defend him or fight with him. Hiei had proved this to him on more occasions than most would ever know – and Yusuke could remember every single instance in which he had remained loyal.
He knew that Hiei would always give his opinion – whether or not Yusuke had asked for it. To that regard, the demon was surprisingly open. He was always making snide comments here and there to convey his view on something, though it was generally done in an insulting manner. He was quick to anger and quick to express that anger, but it had become a trait of his that Yusuke looked forward to seeing.
And he knew to some degree that the youkai had strong feelings for him. Whether those feelings were that of a friend, a brother, or someone in love, Yusuke knew he would probably never know. Hiei tried so hard to look down on him, but his actions generally betrayed that exterior. The youkai would never save someone he viewed as pitiful, would never trust that person to care for and defend him when he rested.
The few things Yusuke understood about Hiei were more than enough.
And it was moments like these when he felt the closest to understanding the fire demon – when they fought. Hiei never swung a sword when they fought, nor did Yusuke ever fire a rei gun. It was always fist to fist, and despite the fire demon’s shorter stature he had plenty of power and speed behind his blows. It was the only time when Hiei held nothing back, when the two of them were alone, in hand-to-hand combat.
At the end, they always ended up down to nothing but their pants and shoes, dripping and glistening with sweat. The training was brutal and intense, but it was always necessary. The more Yusuke’s blows landed on his friend, the more he could see the youkai’s barrier break down. Fragment by fragment fell with each punch.
But when they were too exhausted to train further, the barrier was erect once more. He knew he would never completely break through, but even just the demon tolerating his presence was enough for him to know that he had made some kind of impact.
It was difficult work, being friends with a short-tempered and introverted fire demon. There were more things he didn’t know or understand about his companion than there were things he did. He would never truly know how his own actions or opinions would affect the youkai – would affect how the youkai saw him. He knew he would never completely understand him, but he could certainly try.
After all, Yusuke was always up for a challenge.
