Title: Reaching for the Moon
Rating: PG
Series: Bleach
Characters: Kuchiki Byakuya & Abarai Renji
Word Count: 271

Persistence may indeed pay off after all.

It is a most undesirable habit of yours, reaching for the moon. You have grown so accustomed to wanting the very things you will never have. Your arm outstretches, your palm covers the light… yet when you close your fist, the moon remains in the sky, and your fingers close around nothing but air. Emptiness.

Yet you never relent in your efforts, never dismiss your desires. Your reach out your empty hand and close your fist once more, every time receiving nothing. Every time, feeling empty, hollow. Every time, overcome by dismay. You never learn from your mistakes or disappointments - in reverse, they only seem to strengthen your resolve. You are someone regarded in jest, insisting that you can reach the moon if only you put forth a bit more effort.

It is a foolish addiction of yours, yearning for that which you may never grip. You seem to be the fool, forever destined to reach for the impossible, grasping in the darkness for a miniscule sliver of light, only to trip in your efforts and lose what you deem precious. Persistence will not aid you in your conquest, determination will only hinder you… but you never give up.

You never pull your hand back, and turn on your heel, your head down in disappointment. You never break your gaze locked onto the celestial gem glimmering in the sky. You will never reach the moon, but the effort you put into trying is astounding, awe-inspiring.

You will never grasp the moon in your fingers… however, in all of your effort, perhaps the moon will turn and reach for you instead.
