Um, this one... is not my usual... style. If we could say I have a certain style xD I even depressed myself. I can't help it, its just what I saw when Hikaru walked away with Haruhi and Kaoru watched them longingly. So its bound to be depressing. If its good enough. But don't worry, its kind of short :/

He heard as their steps fell out of synchronization. He watched as a brilliant smile spread across his face, and he shattered when it was not presented to him. He felt the warmth as it was slowly, agonizingly wrenched from him. They were drifting apart, and it was torture.

Relationships either strengthen with devotion or fade away entirely. Would their bond be severed completely? Would their memories fade as their fingertips parted?

Would he be the one left behind, torn and tattered as his very light faded? His brother would move on. His brother would be happy, would be fulfilled… but would he?

He watched as the light in the distance began to dim beyond his vision. He was paralyzed as the light began to gradually disappear, his hands held before him, trying to grasp something that had already slipped beyond his reach.

He felt the current push against him, forcing him further and further. Drifting, drifting.

Don’t leave me behind, he silently begged. He knew his efforts were wasted, his pleading ignored. He directed his gaze toward the retreating back, all of his cries silent as they danced across his eyes.

Kaoru felt a hand snake its way into his, and he looked down to the smile on Haninozuka’s face. “He won’t, Kaochan. He won’t.”

The younger twin glanced away from cerulean eyes to watch his brother, smiling and laughing with Haruhi, taking no notice of Kaoru’s disappearance from his side. He made a great effort to form a small smile for Hani, and he was certain that it had appeared meek and crushed. “I wonder.”

His senior classmate only smiled, and with his free hand pointed to the distance before them. Kaoru hardly wanted to acknowledge twice that he was no longer needed, but he heard his name over his thoughts.

“Kao~ru!” His brother, his other half, called again. “What are you doing? Get over here!”

Hani released his grip, and smiled broadly, nodding his head in Hikaru’s direction. His twin could feel the sadness in his smile, and his hand hastily replaced Haninozuka’s. He squeezed him once for comfort, and directed his brilliant smile toward his brother. It was a gift, one of many that would soon halt.

He was led through the day by the current, unwilling to relinquish his hold on his brother’s hand for more than a moment. He watched as Hikaru’s eyes gradually showed more and more concern, but he could not bring himself to let go. They shared so much through their simple touch, through their fingers as they held fast… Kaoru could not let that bond be severed.

Then the time came when Hikaru’s eyes had begun to inquire rather than singularly hold concern. His twin sat before him, placing his free hand over Kaoru’s even as he gripped the other. He applied pressure momentarily, as if to bring his brother’s eyes to his. Kaoru…? They inquired.

Words were not necessary. Words would not be needed until they drifted a bit further. He was reassured as he could still communicate with his brother with a single gaze. That they were still close enough for that. And he felt selfish, greedy. Hikaru would have to drift, to truly live. He would inevitably part, but it would be better for him. And while it may pain Kaoru, it was bearable if his brother could find some form of happiness. It would be indescribable, the tearing.

He smiled weakly. The parting may be torturous, but he could still cherish what they had left. Before it was gone entirely, before it faded to nothingness. Before everything turned to nothing.

Best to savor their last moments than go through them with trepidation. Kaoru smiled softly again, and returned Hikaru’s reassuring squeeze with one of his own.

I’m fine, it said.

I’ll be fine.

Drifting, drifting.

Fading.

We’ll be fine.
